The MCG may be the home of football but it is just another ground with “ a few sticks at either end”, according to Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon.

Lyon has instilled the philosophy ‘anywhere, anytime’ at Freo and said different AFL grounds should not influence a team’s form, ahead of Sunday’s game against Melbourne.

Ballantyne a certainty

“Bit of grass, a few sticks at either end,” he said.

“I don’t get too caught up, whether it’s small, narrow or wide, it doesn’t worry me.

“You’ve got to get it through your sticks, more than they get it through their sticks.”

Fremantle will only play at the home of football twice during the regular season.

Lyon said Freo needed to bring a four quarter effort on Sunday to win.

“If we don’t turn up with effort, it doesn’t matter where we are playing, we’ll be in trouble,” he said.

“Win the ball, make the tackle and move the ball quickly, you’ll be ok.”

Lyon said Melbourne had vastly improved under premiership coach Paul Roos.

“Paul really instills the fundamentals of the game, which is contest and pressure,” he said.

“It’s a different Melbourne to what we’ve played previously.”
