Midfielder Michael Barlow says he never feels comfortable that his spot in Freo’s side is secure.

The 27-year-old returned in top physical shape, finishing third in Tuesday’s 3km time trial.

However, he said no player was guaranteed a spot in Fremantle’s 22 come round one next year.

“I never feel comfortable with my spot in the team at the start of any pre-season,” he said.

“With guys like Connor Blakely, Ed Langdon, Lachie Weller, who had really exceptional years as first year players last year, they’ll come in and really put some acid on players that have been around the senior team for some time."

Barlow said there was healthy competition for spots at the club, particularly with the arrival of Harley Bennell and the 2015 draftees.

“As long as we are having these discussions and the competition for spots is really healthy, the club is in a really healthy position,” he said.

“On paper we don't like to rely too much on the names and the reputations of players.

“I think we’re only as good as deep as we go, as much as the deepest midfielder can provide.

“We bring in Harley Bennell who can play midfield and forward, and probably half back as well.

“(There is) real competition for spots and hopefully that will maintain the case and we can all stay healthy and have a real crack at it.”
