• Four teams shortlisted to design and build Swan River Pedestrian Bridge
• $29million rail, bridge and road works package under way on Victoria Park Drive
• $5.5million Stadium Station design contract awarded
Transport Minister Dean Nalder said two key public transport elements - the Swan River Pedestrian Bridge and new Stadium Station - would manage people moving to and from the stadium and sports precinct on the Burswood Peninsula.
“Four industry teams have been selected to prepare detailed proposals for the bridge and they will be issued with Request for Proposal documents later this week,” Nalder said.
“Shortlisted teams Decmil-OHL Joint Venture, Freyssinet Australia, Georgiou Group and York Rizzani Joint Venture will have 16 weeks to prepare detailed bridge proposals.
“The bridge details will be developed through the competitive design and construction tender process, however a basic artist’s impression has been prepared for development purposes only - to outline the general alignment across the river, the maximum number of piers, and minimum height and width requirements for the bridge.
“When complete in December 2016, the bridge will provide pedestrian access between the Burswood Peninsula and East Perth.”
Nalder also announced that Hassell Ltd had been awarded a $5.5 million contract to prepare the Stadium Station design, while contractor WBHO Civil was undertaking preliminary earthworks and service preparation at the site.
“The new six-platform special event Stadium Station will be built at the former Belmont Park Station site to allow one train to leave approximately every two minutes following events at the new Perth Stadium,” he said.
Lend Lease - Engineering is undertaking a $29 million package of road and bridge works on Victoria Park Drive to accommodate additional rail lines servicing the new Stadium Station, and a pedestrian underpass that will ultimately connect the station to the new stadium and sports precinct.
Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the State Government was continuing exclusive negotiations with the Preferred Respondent, WESTADIUM, to design, build, partially finance and maintain the new Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct. The contract is expected to be awarded and the successful design revealed in mid-2014.
“Physical pre-construction works for the stadium site were completed in March, six weeks ahead of schedule. The site is now being left to settle under 740,000 tonnes of sand surcharge to ensure it is fully prepared for construction to begin at the end of 2014,” Waldron said.
The new Perth Stadium is scheduled to open in time for the start of the 2018 AFL season.
