Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon spent several years coaching Adam Goodes while an assistant coach at Sydney and considers him a good friend.
He has backed claims that those who continue to jeer the two-time Brownlow Medallist are bigots.
“Ignorance is no excuse,” he said.
“It is offensive and wrong what’s occurring.
“Goodes is a good friend of mine, I’ve coached him, I respect him…he is a really good person.
We should embrace people like Goodes: Lyon
“I really like what Chris Scott said, from here if you continue to boo Adam Goodes you are a racist and a bigot.”
Lyon said he felt the ‘booing’ was no longer about football.
“There is no ambiguity, if there has been ambiguity, which I don’t think there has been,” he said.
“Anyone who thinks the booing is about Adam’s football, clearly Adam doesn’t feel that.”
Lyon praised the wider AFL community for its support of the former Sydney co-captain.
“We’re on the same page,” he said.
“If you boil it down really simply, the whole industry is really disappointed.”
