Peel Thunder succumbed to ladder leaders Subiaco after a fourth-quarter fade-out at Rushton Park on Saturday.
The Thunder were strong for the first three quarters and went into the final break with a five goal lead over last year’s premiers, only to be overrun in the final quarter as Subiaco kicked six goals 13.15 (93) and Peel didn’t register a score 12.4 (76).
The 17-point loss was a result of Subiaco’s swift ball movement across the ground in the final term.
In an impressive game against Subiaco, Peel scored early to establish their lead kicking five goals to one in the first quarter.
A goal from Peel debutant Noah Hura gave the home side momentum heading into the first break.
Blair Bell secured the ball with only a few minutes remaining and kicked the closing goal, leaving the Thunder with a 24-point lead at quarter time.
Ruckman Jack Hannath played well throughout the game, dominating with 46 hitouts.
Ryan Nyhuis said he was a good leader for the team, providing many opportunities through the midfield.
Morabito was also a key player for Peel, securing seven marks and 15 disposals in the first half.
Nyhuis said Morabito was effective off half-back.
“He provided a lot of run through the midfield and on the wing,” Nyhuis said.
Despite the final quarter fade-out Nyhuis said he was looking forward to playing Subiaco again.
“We’re keen to have another crack at them for sure,” Nyhuis said.
“We got pretty close today, and hopefully, we can put together a four-quarter performance if we do meet them again in the finals.”
Peel Thunder play Claremont at the Show Grounds on Saturday 27 August in the final round of the home and away season.
