As Matthew Pavlich’s AFL journey approaches its conclusion, let’s look at the story ahead of Freo’s clash with the Western Bulldogs at Domain Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Who – Pavlich will be the centre of attention on Sunday afternoon when he takes the field for his 353rd and final AFL game. The Fremantle legend will also become just the 22nd player in AFL/VFL history to kick 700 goals if he converts just one major against the Bulldogs
"I couldn't give anything more"
What –The focus for Fremantle is to prepare the younger players for next season by exposing them to AFL football but Ross Lyon has recalled some senior players to play alongside the retiring Pavlich one last time. Matt de Boer and Tendai Mzungu are in the initial squad to play in Pav’s last game.
When – Fremantle have played three of their past four games on Sunday afternoons and have an eight day break, but do need to contend with travel from Sydney following Saturday’s match against GWS. The Bulldog’s have played just one of their past 10 on a Sunday, including six straight Saturday games, and with travel thrown in they could find their routine disrupted.
Where – Domain Stadium hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Western Bulldogs over the years, having won just seven of the 28 matches they’ve played there. Their last victory at the ground came back in 2010 when they defeated West Coast. That being said, the Dogs average just four points per game less at Domain Stadium then they do at the MCG, but concede two goals per game more.
'He's been an integral part of this club' - Lyon on Pav
Why – Both teams have a reason to be motivated for this final round clash. Fremantle are farewelling a legend, while the Western Bulldogs will want to give themselves every chance of a home Elimination Final, if not a double chance. They currently sit seventh on percentage, but if North Melbourne beat GWS, Adelaide defeat West Coast and Collingwood down the Hawks, they could finish as high as fourth.
