Fremantle’s promising young midfield trio of Lachie Weller, Connor Blakely and Ed Langdon have impressed this pre-season, and while competition for spots in Freo’s best-22 is tight, Langdon said the housemates are handling it just fine.
“We all live together, so we’re really supportive of one another and love seeing each other do well,” Langdon said.
All three midfielders were taken in the 2014 draft, but Langdon said he wasn’t competing with the two, but rather looking forward to playing alongside them.
“Lachie (Weller) and Connor (Blakely) are going great and everyone’s moving around so we all have a bit more flexibility in our positions,” he said.
“They’re both fantastic players and are going to be stars but right now I’m happy playing alongside them any opportunity I get.”
For Langdon, continuing to push for senior selection meant capitalising on his strong pre-season and improving on key areas of his game.
“Pre-season has been really enjoyable, tough and a bit different to last year,” he said.
“I’ve put on a few kilos, but just (working on) the fitness and getting my body used to the load that comes with AFL football.
“Skill execution has also been a big focus for me, working on my kicking and handballing.”
Freo's country trips invaluable
The pacey midfielder from Prahran, Victoria spoke at Freo’s AFL Australia Post Community Camp in Merredin, and said being in the Wheatbelt for the first time was an experience he wouldn’t forget.
“It’s been great, I haven’t actually been out here before,” he said.
“It’s quite an eye opener coming from inner city Melbourne.”
