Fremantle veteran Matthew Pavlich should be right for Saturday's critical Carlton Draught Derby despite missing training on Tuesday, according to teammate Michael Johnson.

Pavlich left the ground during last Saturday's loss to Gold Coast to get some treatment on his hip. He played out the match but had ice on his hip in the rooms post-match.

He was out on Fremantle Oval prior to the Fremantle Dockers' training session on Tuesday morning but returned to the rooms when the session began.

Johnson's best footy under Lyon

Johnson said Pavlich would get another opportunity to train on Thursday after pulling up a bit sore from Saturday's loss.

"He was a bit sore from the game on the weekend," Johnson said.

"It's still early in the week.

"He looks all right to me. He would be down there ticking all the boxes when it comes to treatment. He is an elite preparer so he'll be doing everything he can to get up for this weekend's game."

Nat Fyfe and Aaron Sandilands also did not train on Tuesday but it is not unusual for both players to be managed early in the week.

Youngster Alex Pearce did not appear after his first game of the season as a pinch-hit ruckman. Johnson said it was a really impressive performance from Pearce.

In the mix: Round three

"Going into the game with one dominant ruckman and a pinch-hitter like Alex and being his second year playing AFL footy, it's a very good effort," Johnson said.

"It's just great to see a young guy can come in and play his role for the team. He is a backman but to go forward and play a bit in the ruck it's good, it's nice and healthy for the club."

Michael Barlow, Zac Dawson and Ed Langdon did some light running away from the main group.

New recruit Harley Bennell still appears a fair way off returning from his calf injury as he only managed to walk laps and do stationary handball work with Irishman Sean Hurley, who is rehabbing a hip injury.

Youngster Harley Balic was doing some running following his wrist surgery a few weeks ago.
