Fremantle midfielder Connor Blakely said the team is focused on producing a four-quarter effort, after a second term fade-out allowed Geelong back into the contest in the 17-point loss at Domain Stadium on Friday night.
Fremantle got out to a 16 point lead at quarter time, but laid just two tackles in the second quarter as the Cats kicked seven goals to three between the first and third breaks.
“We came into quarter time with really good hit around the ball and really good tackle numbers, but that kind of dropped off a fair bit in the second and third quarter,” Blakely said.
Blakely said the team needed to show more composure with the ball and build attacks rather than play straight-line football.
Lyon praises Ballantyne courage
Fremantle laid 30 tackles in the final term as they kept Geelong pegged in the defensive 50, and Blakely said the team can build off the fourth quarter display.
“We showed really good fight in the last quarter and we can take a lot of confidence with that for next week against Gold Coast,” he said.
Blakely, who finished the game with 22 possessions and a goal, said pressure on the ball carrier was a focus going into the game, as Fremantle laid 10 more tackles than they did against Melbourne last week.
“Obviously it was a focus for all the boys to lift their tackle numbers, and we were really good in the first and fourth quarters, then the second and third quarters let us down a bit,” he said.
Blakely gathered five clearances and kicked his first goal for the club, and said he was happy to get off the mark.

“It was unreal, I think Lachie Weller gave it to me, he’s a good mate of mine and I was able to slot that one,” he said.
“Obviously it’s been about 10 games now where I haven’t kicked a goal, so I was pretty stoked with that.”
Lyon post-match Q & A
Fremantle have an eight-day break before facing Gold Coast next Saturday, and Blakely said the team wanted to play four-quarters.
“What separates the good sides from the bad sides is their ability to play a four-quarter game,” he said.
“We played about two-and-a-half quarters where we were happy with our game, and I think this week against Gold Coast is a really good opportunity for us to play a good four-quarter effort.”
