Slow start the killer: Solomon
Fremantle missed its opportunities in front of goal but it was a poor first half that was the main reason for defeat, according to Dean Solomon
The Hawks set up their 22-point win a run of six goals to nil from halfway through the second quarter, but spent much of the second half at Subiaco Oval on the back foot.
Fremantle dictated terms after half time but couldn't capitalise on its midfield work when going forward. Solomon said that while the missed opportunities were sapping, the game was lost in the first half.
"Probably up until half time we were very disappointing", Solomon said after the match.
"The guys came in here at half time and were very frustrated with the way they'd started. It's not how we wanted to start, when a travelling team comes here we want to start well and get our crowd involved.
"At half time we reassessed (and) I thought the guys rallied and had a crack and got close, we just missed a few opportunities shooting at goal.”
Down by 30 points at half time, Fremantle came out and won all the key stats. It dominated the clearances, won more contested footy and sent the ball into attack 25 times to Hawthorn's 16.
But for all its dominance between the arcs, the home team managed just 6.7 on the scoreboard.
Solomon was one of the players that missed a crucial shot on goal, but he was physical when forward and asserted himself during the team’s turnaround.
"I think we just went back to basics," he said of the side's second half.
"The things we work on, sort of in and under football and just one on one football, using the first option and getting it in quick to our forwards ... we just didn't capitalise on our opportunities."
The loss ended a three-game winning streak for Mark Harvey's men, but it's unlikely to halt the momentum gained since they were languishing at 0-4.
Solomon said belief and confidence had returned to the group after the early season losses.
"You lose a couple of close ones and then a little bit of confidence comes with your first win, you get a bit of a roll on and you start to really believe," he said.
"A couple of kids have come in and really given us a spark, and with Antoni Grover and Chris Tarrant in the key positions down back, it's been very good."
