FORMER Spearwood boy, John Separovich, who relocated to Melbourne a few years ago, has found a great way to stay connected with the Freo Dockers. The 25-year-old from Melbourne’s Glen Iris is a member of the Victorian Cheer Squad.

“I watched for a few years in the stands on my own and it was really hard to be a lone voice in the crowd,” Separovich said.

He has become one of the Victorian Cheer Squad’s “front row boys” responsible for the noise WA supporters hear watching on television.

“We can make a lot more noise when we are all together,” he said.

Last season Separovich began contributing video footage about the activities of supporters “Beyond the Border” to FTV, Fremantle’s online video channel

“I wanted to give people back home an insight into what we do,” he said.

“Six Fremantle games will be played in Melbourne this year and there is still time to sign-up for a Victorian Cheer Squad membership,” he said.

Separovich also helps out with the making of the banner for away matches.

Volunteers are always needed each season to make and hold up the team banner at away matches.

The interstate banner team will kick off its pre-season on Saturday 19 February with a preparation day, referred to as “letter cutting day”, at the North Melbourne Community Centre in Buncle St, North Melbourne.

Interstate Banner Coordinator Hayley Macdivitt said the letter cutting day was a great opportunity for Victorian Cheer Squad members to meet each other and learn what is involved in making a banner.

“We cut out all the letters for the banners so we are organised for the season,” she said.

“It’s an all-hands-on-deck day, but we do take time out for a BYO lunch and this gives us the chance for a chat.

“As our team comes from all over Melbourne, it helps to have this material ready for banner making on the Thursday nights before the games so assembly can be as smooth a process as possible.”

Macdivitt said the team was already planning the banner for the round 1 match against Brisbane at the GABBA on Saturday 26 March.
