As far as goalless droughts go, Michael Walters’ four consecutive games without a major was as impressive as they come.
Last week the small forward rotated through the midfield and racked up a career-high 38 possessions against Richmond at the MCG.
In Sunday’s 35-point win over Carlton at Domain Stadium, Walters played a mix of forward and midfield, kicking three goals while racking up 27 disposals with 14 of those contested.
All of Walters’ goals came in the third term and Walters made the most of his celebrations.
“As you could tell I was really pretty excited to kick those goals,” Walters said.
“Purely because I hadn’t kicked a goal in a number of weeks, and that’s my role.
“I’m there to put the pressure on and kick goals. If you’re not doing that you tend to sort of doubt yourself.
“I’ve said before I wanted to get back to my pressure, try to get to the contest and see if things play out.”
Despite delivering in Fremantle’s midfield over the past fortnight, Walters said it was still important to impact the scoreboard.
The 26-year-old revealed that he’s been working with forwards coach David Hale on shaping his game around another star small forward in Cyril Rioli.
Hale played alongside Rioli in Hawthorn’s premierships from 2013-2015 prior to joining Fremantle as a coach in 2016.
“David says that Cyril works on his pressure first, he tried to get to as many contests and he can and the goals will come.
“If you put the pressure on the goals will come and over the last couple of weeks that’s what I’ve aimed to do that.
“Although the goals didn’t come I was able to help the other boys score.
“It was also good that I got to add to the scoreboard today but also bring some pressure as well.”
