To Fremantle’s inaugural AFL Women’s members and fans,
We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the incredible support from our members and fans throughout the past five months.
Thank you for being part of history.
In every kilometre the girls ran in pre-season, every tackle, every late night at training – it felt like you were right there with us.
We’ve loved your commitment at our first game, to come down early to show your support with a lock-out crowd.
It was an incredible feeling and an incredible moment for WA sport. Most of all, it was just wonderful to see everyone out there in purple.
We have worked really hard since our first training session on 22 November but, unfortunately, on the field the results didn’t always go our way.
Battling injuries, we fought out a draw against GWS and then dropped a heartbreaker to Collingwood by just one point.
But through the hardship we’ve seen continuous improvement, culminating in our first win at home against Carlton. What better place to belt out the team song for the first time than at Domain Stadium, the home of footy in WA.
We’re excited about the challenge of the off-season and building this team from where we are now.
We’ve certainly set our goals high and aim to be really competitive in 2018.
From 2017, one moment that stuck with me was talking to one of our young fans after a game at Fremantle Oval.
She couldn’t have been much older than seven but told me that one day she wanted to play AFL for the Fremantle Dockers.
That is what the competition has been all about.
It’s been an incredible honour to lead Fremantle in the historic first season and
I can’t wait to see what 2018 will bring.
