It was a case of history repeating as David Mundy sunk the hearts of Richmond fans in a thrilling two-point victory on Sunday at the MCG.
Two years prior, Fremantle earned a similar result off the boot of Mundy – converting in the final minute to seal a four-point win over the Tigers in round 17 of the 2015 season.
Mundy had missed his last attempt to win a game after the siren against Geelong in 2014, but fellow Freo leader Michael Walters said he was confident in Mundy’s ability to deliver.
“When Richmond kicked a goal late to take the lead we weren’t sure how long was left,” Walters said.
“But luckily enough Lachie got that clearance and Dave ended up marking and sealing the game for us.”
“All credit goes to the Tigers, they fought right to the end and they made it tough for us.
“We really had to work for that final goal and Dave was able to mark and seal the win.
“He really stood up when we needed him and that’s what a leader does.”
Usually a small forward, Walters starred in his second straight appearance in Fremantle’s midfield.
Walters racked up a career-high 38 possessions, with 15 of those contested.
The 26-year-old credited his fellow members of the leadership group as he adjusted to a new role.
“In the midfield it’s different,” Walters said.
“It’s been a good learning curve and there’s no better people to be learn off than Dave, (captain) Nat (Fyfe) and Lachie.”
“I’ve found that the running patterns are different to what I’m used to.
“I’m starting to pace myself a bit more, whereas in the forward line you do more sprint work and more zig-zagging.
“I can’t go all guns blazing from the start because I don’t want to tire myself out.”
