The key to building up Fremantle’s young Dockers lies in playing to their strengths, according to forward Shane Kersten.
Kersten said Freo’s running style of play was crucial in securing their second win of the season.
After matching Melbourne in the opening term, the Demons raced out to a 21-point half time lead with five straight goals in the second term.
Freo’s ball movement and pressure improved dramatically in the third term, piling on seven goals to none.
“We just got back to what we did in the first quarter,” Kersten said.
“We moved the ball well - it was free flowing footy which suits us.
“We’ve got a young enthusiastic team with a lot of run in their legs. I think if we can do that it’s only going to help us as we keep moving forward."
Kersten kicked Fremantle’s opening goal of the game, set up by fellow forward recruit Cam McCarthy.
“Cam and I are trying to gel and I think we’re getting better as each week,” Kersten said.
“If I can help him out, he can help me out which should make it a good year.”
Kersten said he went through an emotional rollercoaster as he watched McCarthy run in Fremantle’s match winner at the death.
“I was running into the 50 at the time,” Kersten said.
“I wasn’t too sure if he laid boot onto the ball but as soon as the umpire went back and saluted that it was a goal, I was ecstatic.
“It was a game changer so I’m obviously thankful he got there and kicked it.”
