Friendships will be put aside on Sunday as the WAWFL semi-finals kick off between Swan Districts and the Coastal Titans at Claremont Oval.
Freo AFLW captain Kara Donnellan will line up alongside as many as four Fremantle teammates as she leads reigning premiers Swan Districts but said she doesn’t feel any added pressure on her team to live up to last seasons winning result.
Ebony Antonio, Kelly Gibson, Ashley Sharp and Stacey Barr could be named for the Swans alongside Donnellan, while teammates Dana Hooker and Hayley Miller could feature for the Titans.
“It’s anyone’s game and up for grabs,” Donnellan said.
“I think it’s more exciting that we get the opportunity to play this weekend and get a second chance if we don’t win.
“We’re sticking with the old cliché of taking each week as it comes.”
Hooker, who is likely to line up in the midfield alongside Donnellan, echoed these remarks after her side were named minor premiers for the home and away season.
“From previous years whether you finish top or you finish second or third on the ladder it doesn’t always mean too much in finals,” Hooker said.
“We’ve had a good season but really all it gives you is that home ground advantage but it’s anyone’s ball game.
“We don’t see it as added pressure, we just see it as a whole new set of challenges for the next few games.”
Playing against each other is an added highlight for both Donnellan and Hooker who praise the strong friendships they have developed with their Freo teammates.
“Obviously we’ve got nothing but respect for our opposition and more importantly, we have a pretty strong friendship off the field,” Donnellan said.
“With all the Freo girls you cross the white line and you’re playing the game against each other.
“As soon as you come off the field you’re mates again and you have a bit of a laugh.”
The winner of Sunday’s game will advance to the Grand Final on Sunday 20 August.
Third and forth place East Fremantle and Claremont meet at East Fremantle Oval in an elimination final with the winner playing the loser of Swan Districts and the Coastal Titans.
The East Fremantle side could have up to six Fremantle players on their side including Brianna Green, Gabby O’Sullivan, Mel Caulfield, Belinda Smith, Alex Williams and Cassie Davidson.
