Jon Griffin has always relished playing in the AFL's Indigenous Round while representing the side he grew up supporting.
But his inclusion for the clash with the Crows on Saturday at Adelaide Oval has an added significance.
Including Griffin, Fremantle has named eight players in their starting 22 with indigenous heritage.
Barring any late changes, Freo will break the record of seven indigenous players in a single side, first set by Fremantle in round seven of the 2003 season.
Approximately 10 per cent of players in the AFL system are indigenous, however this number is a significantly higher for Fremantle at 23 per cent.
“Fremantle as a football club have always had a strong affiliation with indigenous players,” Griffin said.
“So to be able to have so many playing at the one time is awesome.
“It’s something that I’m very proud of and I’m lucky to be a part of it.”
Griffin, a versatile ruck/forward, comes into the side to replace the injured Aaron Sandilands.
The 92-game AFL player featured in the opening two rounds of the 2017 season and has averaged 31 hit outs per game during a further six WAFL appearances.
“There’s some big shoes to fill. Aaron’s obviously a great player,” Griffin said.
“Footy is full of challenges and I feel I’ve been playing some solid footy in the WAFL.
“I’m confident I can play my role and do my best so, hopefully, we can get a win tomorrow."
Griffin added that being able to pull on Fremantle’s indigenous jumper adds extra meaning to the game.
“I was having a conversation with a friend and he was saying it was a fantastic week to come back into the side,” Griffin said.
“There’s a real pride in representing your family, your friends and your culture. It’s a great initiative by the AFL to have the round.”
