First year defender Griffin Logue feels he’s benefitting from Fremantle’s education phase, as the club bloods its young players at AFL level.
Logue’s most recent performance was one positive on an otherwise disappointing evening at Domain Stadium, as Fremantle fell by 52-points to Hawthorn.
Standing at 193cm, Logue showed impressive speed for his size, collecting a career-high 15 disposals and taking eight marks in Fremantle’s backline.
Led by Michael Johnson and Lee Spurr, Fremantle’s defence features Joel Hamling, 24, Ethan Hughes, 22, Connor Blakely, 21, as well as Logue.
The 19-year-old credited the senior players in Fremantle’s defensive group, including those who have made way for youth.
This includes Zac Dawson, who has played 166 games at AFL level including four AFL grand finals
“It’s endless, the amount of stuff I learn,” Logue said.
“Guys like Zac Dawson are really taking me under their wing and helping me out for the past few weeks and Johno and Hammo have been really good (while on the ground) with positioning and defence.”
Blakely, who has featured in the midfield for most of his 32-games so far, has switched to the backline since Freo’s round 13 bye.
Logue paid tribute to Blakely, who is averaging 30.25 disposals from his four games down back.
“He’s really fitting in well and that half back role,” Logue said.
“He really runs off well and gives us a lot of rebound so it’s helpful having him back there.”
