One year into his coaching involvement with Fremantle’s AFLW side, Brady Grey is learning lessons that he is finding useful in all aspects of his football.
Grey has completed his certificate two and his coaching accreditation course as well as the AFL Coaches Association’s Next Coach Program, and is continuing to gain experience as a coach with the AFLW side.
The 22-year-old has drawn a parallel between Freo’s AFLW players and new men’s draftees as they find their feet at an AFL club.
“They all come in with the same attitude,” Grey said.
“They’re coming from full time work or study and their perspective of footy is a lot different to what we have and it’s something that I really enjoy.
“It puts it into perspective, the opportunity that we have as AFL players and certainly the young guys coming in. Just getting them in and really enjoy the experience and the opportunity being presented.”
Grey has been pleased to see an increase in standard of training across the board as the Freo women’s side approaches the second AFLW season.
“They’re going really well so far,” Grey said.
“We’ve got a lot of girls training at the moment, which is a lot different to last year. We’ve only had a few injuries and we’re hoping they’ll all be ready for round one.
“Having more numbers on the park will certainly help the skill level and the effort needed to grind through each training session.
“The girls are looking really positive and I guess it’s the same as the men’s team. We’re not coming off great seasons but we’re training well and we’re excited to see where it takes us.”
Grey said he’s seen the Freo squad come back in terrific condition and ready to take on their second AFLW season.
“I think going into season two a lot of the girls know what’s expected at the next level, so their training program in the off-season was a lot more diligent,” Grey said.
“They’ve come back in a lot better nick than last year.
“You can tell by their pre-season training so far, they’re reaping the benefits so far and hopefully we get the rewards with wins next season.”
