Bradley Hill might be the proud winner of the 2017 Doig Medal as Fremantle’s best and fairest but the midfielder has still highlighted areas for improvement for his second season at the club.
The 24-year-old isn’t expecting to see any development in his already elite endurance running abilities. Instead, he has eyes on improving his strength and his skills when under the pump.
“Towards the end of the season, I sort of felt like I faded away and sometimes when I was a bit fatigued my kicking would probably drop off a little bit,” Hill said.
“What I want to work on is a bit more contested, getting a bit stronger and working on my tackling and stuff as well. I just want to keep getting better each year.
“I don’t want to put on too much weight because you know what type of player I am, I’m an outside runner. You can still stronger in the gym and you don’t have to put on any weight, but they are some of my focuses for next year.”
GPS data released by the AFL in 2017 showed that Hill led the league in repeat sprint efforts.
At 24, Hill is working on maintaining his endurance running rather than enhancing it.
“Obviously from when I first got drafted I have got a lot fitter, training every day and being in the AFL environment,” Hill said.
“I’m not sure I’ll get too much fitter, I’m getting a bit old now so I think I’m going to stay where I am now.
“If I get any fitter that will be a bonus but I feel pretty comfortable where I am.”
Hill said he couldn't wait to test his running abilities at Optus Stadium, with Fremantle's home opener in round two against Essendon on 31 March.
"I went there the other day just for a little look around and it’s pretty unreal," Hill said.
"I’m pretty excited to get there next year and play some footy there."
Despite Optus Stadium being slight shorter than Freo's former home at Domain Stadium, Hill feels he can be just as damaging with his ability to move up and down the ground.
"There’s enough space anywhere, you’ve just got to make your own space," Hill said.
