New recruit Rory Lobb has his eyes set on playing a significant role in a new-look forward line at Fremantle in 2019.

The former Giant and fellow key forward Jesse Hogan joined the club during the 2018 NAB AFL Trade Period, and Lobb is confident they can form a formidable duo up front. 

“I feel like if you can have a key target going forward, it makes it harder for the opposition defenders to defend your forward line,” Lobb said. 

“I see myself as that sort of target, going down the line and also Jesse as well.”

At GWS in 2018, the 207cm Lobb played as the lead ruckman after injuries to the Giants’ primary ruckmen.

The 25-year-old prefers playing as a forward who pitches in with the ruck, which is his expected role at Fremantle. 

“That’s where I play my best footy, as a forward/ruck,” Lobb said.

“I tried to rise and take that (primary) ruck role (at GWS).

"I thought (Fremantle) would be a better fit for me playing as a forward/ruck and it would be a good opportunity to play my best footy.”

When playing as a forward, Lobb feels he has more energy to impact the game compared to what can be a draining role in the ruck.

“I felt like when I was in the ruck, wrestling in the stoppages the whole time, I lost that run and ability to fly for my marks,” Lobb said.

“As a forward I feel like I can do that more.”

A fully fit Lobb is set to commence training at Fremantle in mid-November.

“I finished off the season really well with no injuries,” Lobb said. 

“I feel really good. This is probably the best I’ve felt coming out of a season.”

At pre-season training, Lobb will join a couple of good friends he made during his time at the Giants.

“Nathan Wilson and Cam McCarthy…I was good mates with them when we were at the Giants,” Lobb said.

“I’ve already seen Nathan and he’s really excited to have me here.

“Nathan loves it here. He sees the young list and where we can go. We’re really hoping we can have a good pre-season and go from there.”
