Alex Pearce said the support from the Freo Faithful didn’t go unnoticed by the playing group in Saturday’s 28-point win against Gold Coast, with the defender highlighting the importance of getting the win for the 33,388 fans in attendance at Optus Stadium.
The game was an ‘away’ clash for Fremantle, with Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium hosting the Commonwealth Games.
The result was a record attendance for a Gold Coast ‘home game’, eclipsing the 27,914 at the Suns’ first ever home game against Carlton at the Gabba in 2011.
“It was a fantastic day today,” Pearce said.
“It was just good to keep fighting it out and get a win for all the fans that turned out, which was a really great result.”
The match was the annual Starlight Purple Haze Game, which raises funds for seriously ill children and their families.
The money donated on the day will add to the $1.16 million raised in the past 15 years.
“It’s one of the most special days of the year for us,” Pearce said.
“Especially on a day like this, where it wasn’t our home game, to see so many of our fans come out to support the Starlight Foundation, it was just sensational.
“To see the kids after the game really enjoying it and getting walked off the ground, it was a fantastic day.”
The day was capped off by the Fremantle’s five Starlight Stars going in the middle of the huddle for the team song.
“I’m sure they enjoyed that,” Pearce said.
“I loved it when I first got in the middle of a song, so I’m sure it will be a memory they won't forget.”
