For the second time in his five-game AFL career, Ryan Nyhuis came in as a late inclusion as Fremantle defeated St Kilda by 30 points on Saturday at Optus Stadium.
Nyhuis replaced the injured Stephen Hill and collected 17 disposals, with seven contested possessions, while taking four marks.
The 21-year-old said the key to handling a surprise inclusion was to always be ready.
“It’s obviously tough to prepare for but I feel like I’ve taken a professional approach to it,” Nyhuis said.
“I prepare as if I’m playing every week so getting that late call-up, it’s nothing new for me.
“It’s been a big week for our club and the boys really dug deep.
"We were challenged late by the Saints, they really came at us but it was great to get the four points.”
Nyhuis played as a defender for the first time in his AFL career after playing as a forward during his four appearances in 2017.
“Any small forwards that went deep, it was my responsibility to play on them. I've played that role through the WAFL for a couple of years,” Nyhuis said.
“I’m starting to build my brand around that. So for the team to take a chance on me and back me in, I’m definitely grateful.
“I’ve played a couple games forward now for Fremantle but I definitely feel comfortable down back.
"Alex Pearce, Michael Johnson and Joel Hamling really supported me and I felt comfortable down there.”
Nyhuis said the step up to AFL level is made easier due to Freo's close relationship with Peel.
“It’s a good system down there,” Nyhuis said.
"We try to play to the same structures and same formations at Peel so that transition definitely makes it easier when you come to AFL level."
The win means Nyhuis will have an extra reason to enjoy Mother’s Day with his family, who have moved to Perth from the Northern Territory.
“My mum and my two brothers are here permanently for a year so it’s nice to have that family close by,” Nyhuis said.
“Mother’s Day is tomorrow so it’s good to have my mum here and I definitely feel the love from them.
“We’ve got a few things up our sleeves, a few presents and me and my brothers and Dad will put something nice together for her in the evening.”
