The image of the sports star rocking up to the stadium in headphones is common in almost any elite sport.
While it’s assumed that most are using some form of pump-up music to get into the right headspace, Nat Fyfe revealed his own surprising method during his appearance on Fox Footy’s BOB program on Tuesday night.
Talkback radio.
Host Bob Murphy thought he’d seen it all in his 312-game career with the Western Bulldogs and jokingly declared that Fyfe was officially ‘out there’ – until he heard the Fremantle captain’s explanation.
“You know why, when I was young and we would go to footy with Dad in the car, we’d have ABC radio on and so it’s almost like it takes me to that space,” Fyfe said.
“And I listen to it on the bus ride to the MCG for example when we’re travelling and I can get the app on my phone.
“I do (think it’s nostalgia). Putting the talkback on and travelling to footy is a time that I spent with my dad and so that’s where I want to be, I want to be in that space.
“I don’t really want to go into the heavy music pump up, I’d rather just spend some time with Dad before we get to the game.”

Fyfe also shared his own thoughts on his ‘top knot’ hairstyle, which he admits has its critics and revealed why his hairstyle changed on an almost yearly basis at the start of his career.
“The more people say cut the hair, go back to the black boots, the more I go you beauty, grow the hair and wear the fluoro boots,” Fyfe said.
“You know the footy cards that come out, I said to Pav (Matthew Pavlich) that I waned a different look in each card so when I get to the end I’ve got a nice eclectic mix.”
