Fremantle midfielder Kiara Bowers is hopeful that Fremantle has what it takes to push for a finals spot ahead of Saturday’s clash with Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.
Freo made a statement against the Bulldogs last Sunday with an exciting 18-point win. With two rounds to play, Fremantle remain strong contenders for a top-two place.
Fremantle currently sit third and outside the top-two on percentage but Bowers remains confident that a top-two spot is within reach.
“We go into each game thinking we’re going to play to the best of our ability and we’re going to go out there and score the way that we should score and it’s been paying off,” Bowers said.
“We truly believe we can make the finals.”
Bowers had an outstanding night against the Bulldogs, racking up 23 disposals, 16 tackles, five marks and a goal, she polled a perfect 10 coaches votes and earned a nomination for the AFLW MVP of the Week.
After a long battle with knee injuries that saw her miss the first two AFLW seasons, Bowers said she is happy to be able to repay the club for their support.
“It’s pretty incredible to be able to be out there, obviously having so long out I just want to prove to the girls, to the staff and to everyone that supports Freo, that I want to be out there for you guys and want to play for you guys,” Bowers said.
“Getting recognition for that obviously is quite incredible. I’ll do anything for the team and if that means hurting a bit throughout the week, I’m very happy do that.”
Aside from Bowers, there was a spread of great performances including Kellie Gibson with three goals, Dana Hooker with 21 disposals and nine clearances, and Sabreena Duffy with two goals.
Bowers said this spread of talent is crucial to their team success.
“You know your team is playing well when you get a spread of number of girls through the players’ votes and it’s not just one or two standing up,” Bowers said.
“Kellie had an outstanding game kicking three, Duffy stood up when we needed her to and it’s things like that that keep the girls going and pushes us to get the four points in the end.
Freo are chasing their second away win for the season and are looking to build on the club’s first ever away win in round one against Melbourne.
“We won in Melbourne this year so we’re quite confident, the girls are up and about this week… it’s been a six day break but we’re all itching to get on a plane.”
