Fremantle leader Reece Conca is pleased with the maturity and development on show in the club’s younger ranks after playing his first hit-out in the purple jumper on Sunday.
Conca lined up alongside Andrew Brayshaw and veteran David Mundy in Fremantle’s midfield in Fremantle’s JLT Series clash with West Coast, with the 19-year-old Brayshaw impressing for the second consecutive week.
Brayshaw collected 22 disposals, 11 contested possessions, six tackles, five clearances and four inside 50s and led Freo for AFL Fantasy points.
He also praised Adam Cerra, who has played a number of roles in his two years at Fremantle.
“I think Andy’s had a fantastic pre-season. Both games, he’s really fought it out, even Adam Cerra in the last quarter, he was really composed,” Conca said.
“They’re playing well beyond their years and I think it’s great to have a lot of senior experience around them like David Mundy, who has been around for a very long time and he’s been great for them.
“They’re having stints around the ground which is great for their exposure as players, especially ‘Cez’, he’s almost played every position on the ground and he’s playing it well.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys coming through, Tay’s (Taylin Duman) been outstanding, Darcy (Tucker) was really strong again. It’s exciting.”
Conca was playing on his return from a knee infection and led Freo with 26 disposals on the day.
“I had plenty of fun out there, it was good to run out with the guys with the purple on,” Conca said.
“Personally, it was good to just shake a few cobwebs. There are a few things I need to work on as an individual but as a team, we’ve got a little bit to work on but I’m just rapt to get out there and pull the boots on.”
Conca said Fremantle will focus on running out their games after fading late in their two JLT clashes against the two 2018 grand finalists.
“It’s been a pretty positive pre-season, we’ve done a lot of hard work since November,” Conca said.
“This is what the JLT Series is all about and coming up against two quality teams has been really good for us.
We’ve learnt a lot of lessons and we’ve been really competitive to half time and maybe dropped off a little bit in the second half both games, whether that’s concentration or fitness.
“We’re putting in place a lot of the stuff we’ve developed over the pre-season. We’ll have another good week on the track and we’ll be raring to go round one.”
