The club’s new elite training facilities will be integrated with a community project at Cockburn Central West, which has a total project cost of $106 million.
The funding commitment was detailed in Thursday’s State Budget and outlined by Premier Colin Barnett and Treasurer Mike Nahan on Friday morning.
“There is a demand in the community to see high quality and co-located sporting and recreational facilities,” Premier Barnett said.
“At this point the state has contributed the land, plus $2.4 million dollars and in yesterday’s State Budget the state contributed a further $10 million dollars to make this project a reality.
“The project is large, diverse and will be a world class facility for sport and recreation.
“The Fremantle Dockers intend to also locate on this site which I’m sure will be great for their supporter base and their membership base.
“The public money from the tax payers through the State Budget is going straight to the City of Cockburn for the community facilities, it is not going to the Fremantle Dockers as such.
Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosich stated the funding benefited all partners involved in the project and ultimately the community.
“It is the last piece in the funding jigsaw for the community aspects of this project,” Rosich said.
“We are responsible for funding our own dedicated club facilities in the project. But by working together with the partners in this project, we were able to get a greater impact from the investment that is being spent and, therefore, bring the total cost of the project down.”
Rosich said the announcement meant the Fremantle Dockers and City of Cockburn will work together to appointment a builder later this year.
“Cockburn is a very innovative city and we are proud to partner with them on this project,” he said.
