Key forward Michael Apeness could soon receive the call up to play AFL football, according to Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon.
Apeness has suffered two knee injuries and hasn’t played for Freo since their round 17 clash with GWS in 2014.
While the 200cm big man has been building solid performances for Peel Thunder in the WAFL, Lyon said Freo would continue to be diligent in managing his return.
“He’s been quite strong and he’s still building as he’s obviously missed a fair bit of footy,” Lyon said.
“We’re looking at him and we’re trying to do the right thing by him.
“He’s played four games back now, and he had a big summer even though he was building so we are cautious with him.”
Youngster thankful for WAFL "apprenticeship"
Apeness had a strong presence in Peel Thunder’s win against East Fremantle last week with 13 disposals and two goals, while also performing well as the second ruckman behind Zac Clarke.
Lyon said Apeness’ recent performances were not only reflections of his physical abilities but of his competitiveness as well.
“We don’t have many first round picks and he is one that’s standing up,” he said.
“He’s a really good runner for his size.
“He’d be in our top eight at the club for his endurance and he’s got a natural genetic disposition to be able to run, which is nice for a 200cm guy and he’s really competitive (as well).”
