Fremantle defender Nathan Wilson says he feels proud to be forging a career in the AFL as he approaches his 100th AFL game, to be played against Gold Coast on Sunday at Metricon Stadium.
The former GWS Giant played 77 AFL games for GWS between 2012 and 2017 and will run out for his 23rd game for Fremantle on Sunday.
Wilson said that he hopes for nothing more than to celebrate a win with his teammates and family.
“Everyone will be coming over to the Gold Coast for the game which will be a good way to celebrate the game,” Wilson said.
“It will be good fun to get away as a group. After a good win last week we have to bring that effort again.
"We can’t wait to get over there and, hopefully, the boys turn up like we did last week.”
Wilson said it took a few years to feel like he belonged at AFL level and is hopeful he has now built the foundations for a longer career.
“Growing up as a kid from Mandurah wanting to play AFL, just playing one game felt like an achievement,” Wilson said.
“To play 100, it makes you proud. Going from Mandurah to Sydney when I was 17 – I didn’t feel like I played very good footy in my first couple of years.
“I was a bit skinny and raw when I was in Sydney and it took until I was about three years in to feel like I was able to stamp my authority. From there I started to play a bit more consistently.
“Hopefully, there are a few more games to come. You never know, but fingers crossed I can get to 150 and 200 if I’m lucky.”
