Lachie Neale doesn’t care what his role is in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final against Hawthorn, he just wants to get a game and realise his dream.

The 20-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a breakout season in 2013, but he was designated Freo’s sub in Saturday night’s preliminary final against Sydney.

Senior coach Ross Lyon contacted Neale the night before the game informing him his name was in the mix to receive the green vest.

He found out the next day he’d be starting on the pine, and while every footballer would prefer to play from the start, Neale said he’d gladly reprise the role this Saturday.

“I would be happy just to get a guernsey on Grand Final day,” he said.

“We’ve got a great side in at the moment and there’s only a couple of injuries.

“Just to be given a game and be involved in such a massive occasion for the club would be an honour.

“I’m happy to play whatever role is given to me by Ross and the coaching staff.”

The South Australian was given some advice before the Swans’ game by Freo assistant and Sydney premiership hero Brett Kirk, who he has worked closely with this season.

“Brett said being the sub is a different role, but he told me to keep doing what you’ve been doing, and when you get your chance out there, stick to the basics and you’ll be fine,” Neale said

If Neale lines up in Saturday’s decider, it would be before a crowd more than twice the size of the largest he’s ever played a game in front of.

Still elated with the prelim final win, Neale said it was all a bit surreal.

“It’s every kid’s dream to run out onto the MCG on Grand Final day,” he said.

“I’ll soak it all up in the warm-up and then switch on and get ready for the game.

“It would an amazing experience and one I’m looking forward to.”
