Fremantle midfielder Hayley Miller is eager for a strong 2020 AFLW season after taking home the top award at Optus Stadium on Monday night, named WAFLW Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best for 2019.
Miller’s WAFLW accolade backs up her 2018 Dhara Kerr award under the previous WAWFL competition, proving her talent among the top of the league.
Miller says after a well-deserved break, the hard work will begin as both herself and her fellow teammates gear up for Freo’s fourth year in the AFLW competition.
“We’ll go to Bali for a couple of weeks, so I’ll have a bit of downtime but then we’re back into a pre-pre-season block and straight into pre-season where it all begins,” Miller said.
“I think we’ve got something to prove when we go back.
“We didn’t get over the line at the start of this year and it was a bit disappointing.
“We want to go that step further, make that grand final and win it.”

Miller said the fairest and best accolade came as a surprise, but labelled consistency as a key factor to her season.
“It’s a bit unexpected, these awards are pretty prestigious so if you are lucky enough to win one it’s always a bit of a shock,” Miller said.
“(I think I was) pretty consistent game to game, but it probably wasn’t my best season.
“With all the girls taking that step up as well it’s hard to pick how you are faring against other girls.
“I guess they (the umpires) saw something in me and thought I had a good season.”
Miller only played a total of nine games out of a possible 15 rounds, making her win an even more impressive feat.
The talented ball-winner was restricted to nine games under rules put in place for players in the AFLW competition.
Her Subiaco team fell short of a WAFLW grand final this weekend and she said would happily trade in the individual honour for a chance at the 2019 title.
“With the AFLW system we have to miss a couple of WAFLW games,” Miller said.
“I guess that’s what comes with being at that elite level but those games that I did play I obviously did well enough to poll some votes.
“I think Subiaco cleaned up (the awards) tonight, but I‘d give all of it back if we could win a premiership.”
The awards dinner had a Freo flavour with Fremantle rookie Lindal Rohde named the Cath Boyce Rookie of the Year and Tarnee Tester receiving the Joanne Huggins Leading Goal Kicker award.
Rohde was signed as Freo’s final rookie spot in June, while Tester was invited to the Fremantle Dockers Talent Academy and trained alongside Freo’s AFLW squad earlier this year.
Fremantle defender Evie Gooch (6th) and forward/midfielder Ashley Sharp (8th) also finished in the top ten of the Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best award.
