Midfielder Bradley Hill has lamented Fremantle’s inability to stay composed in the final stages of their three-point loss to Gold Coast on Sunday at Metricon Stadium.
Freo held a three-goal lead early in the final term before the Suns stormed home.
“Obviously it didn’t go the way we planned to play,” Hill said.
“We were still in the game and we still could have won it.
‘I felt late in the game, when we were up, we needed to be more composed with the footy and they were able to hurt us on turnover.
“They had a bit more legs than us late in the game and they were able to run over the top of us.”
Hill highlighted Fremantle’s inability to get out of their defensive 50, with the ball spending 62 per cent of the time in the Suns’ forward half in the final term.
Fremantle’s 86 turnovers were the fifth-highest for the round.
“They were able to score heavily on us when we were getting it out of our defensive end,” Hill said.
“They were able to turn it over. Even with our kick ins, we were kicking it long down the line, they were turning it over and scoring pretty easily on us.”
Hill was one of Fremantle’s best on the day, leading the team for disposals (32), rebound 50s (eight) and metres gained (750).
The 25-year-old said his aim is to consistently deliver the same effort.
“My role is just the same every week, playing on the wing, working both ways up and down the ground,” Hill said.
“I was just trying to work hard for the team. I’ll try as best as I can every week and, hopefully, I can play some consistent footy.”
Hill said he was pleased with Jesse Hogan’s efforts in his first game for Fremantle.
Playing forward, Hogan led Fremantle with eight score involvements and also helped Freo get on top in the third term when he moved into the midfield.
“I feel Jesse played well today,” Hill said.
“He’s got a great football brain and he was able to win a few stoppages and get the ball going our way.
“Obviously he’s crucial up forward too. It was his first game and he’ll keep getting better for us.”
