Fremantle forward Brandon Matera says it’s good to kick a winning score even in a practice match.

Freo defeated West Cost by 29 points in a solid hit-out at Lathlain Park on Sunday.

New recruit Matera worked his way into the game and believes Fremantle’s forwards are starting to work well together. 

“It is tough coming in to a new team but the more I work with the forwards the more we’ll gel together,” Matera said.

“It was good to get my hands on it in that last quarter but the boys were working well up forward and it’s good to kick a winning score too.”

Matera looked exciting in the final quarter with two goal assists and kicking one himself.

Despite playing West Coast again next Sunday at HBF Arena for their second JLT game, Matera says Fremantle were only focussed on themselves.

“We didn’t look too much into West Coast, it was more building on what we did last week (against Adelaide) and working on the fundamentals,” Matera said.

“We worked on a few things we needed to and hopefully Ross (Lyon) is happy with it all.”

Experienced forwards Michael Walters, Hayden Ballantyne and ruckman Aaron Sandilands were rested in the second half of the game leaving Fremantle’s younger forwards to storm home for the win against the Eagles.

Cam McCarthy and rookie Bailey Banfield both kicked three goals and Shane Kersten kicked two goals up forward.
