Fremantle’s playing and coaching group spent Wednesday afternoon volunteering their time at St Patrick’s Community Support Centre, handing out refreshments to those in need and receiving a tour of the Fremantle facility.

The visit coincides with a $20,000 donation to the not-for-profit from the Fremantle Players’ Community Charitable Fund, providing the St Pat’s campaign with a head start in raising vital funds for the fit-out of its new Engagement Hub.

In 2018, Fremantle became the first Australian sporting team to launch a player-backed charity fund with assistance from the Fremantle Foundation.

Designed to support disadvantaged people in the local community, the players donate their own personal funds to help make a difference.

A driver behind the donation and visit, Captain Alex Pearce encouraged the Freo family to get behind the initiative and donate to the appeal.

“It’s always good to have moments like this where we step away from the training track and acknowledge we do have a bigger role in society and within the Freo community,” Pearce said.

“This charitable fund was set up largely on the back of David Mundy’s support, and to be able to continue that on, help build a legacy and set an example to allow players to think beyond our four walls – I'm really proud of what we’ve been able to do.

“Hopefully this donation is a small step in a larger goal St Pat’s have, and that will help to provide greater services for people, and (aim) to end homelessness.”

St Pat’s provides community housing and specialist support services for people facing homelessness and have been in this space aiming to make a change for 50 years.

Construction for the new Hub is already underway; however, the organisation has launched a $750,000 public appeal for the fit out, which once completed will provide those doing it tough with access to meals, showering, health and dental care.

St Pat’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Piu said he was thrilled with the support received from Fremantle players.

“St Pat’s is honoured that the Fremantle Dockers players have chosen to support us through their Fremantle Players Community Giving Fund,” Piu said.

“We want our new Engagement Hub to offer the best services possible, and this donation is a wonderful way to kick-off our campaign and show people experiencing homelessness that their community cares.”
