Star Fremantle recruit Shai Bolton says it’s been “exciting” and “easy” to slot into his new Club and life back in Perth.

Traded home after eight years with Richmond, Bolton has revealed a Fremantle legend had a huge influence on his decision to return to WA.

“Son Son (Michael Walters), we had the Indigenous camp a while ago and he’s kept in contact with me,” said Bolton.

“As a young fella growing up, watching him play football, I obviously idolised him."

“It's good to play with him now, hopefully we get a couple of games together.

“I supported them (Freo) as a young fella. I think it’s a good culture, the boys were always messaging me. It was a pretty easy decision on my end.”

Adamant he’ll play any role he’s assigned by coach Justin Longmuir, Bolton’s finishing in front of goal has been a feature of his pre-season sessions since arriving in Perth.

After two premierships with Richmond, expectations are high for the gun recruit but the man himself is taking it all in his stride.

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself,” said Bolton.

“I just want to connect with my teammates and play good football. Just want to enjoy my football over home and enjoy my teammates, just have some fun.”

The 26-year-old says he’s still adapting to hot conditions at Cockburn after a delayed start to pre-season due to the recent birth of his second child with partner Hasina.

The lure of playing in front of family and friends at Optus Stadium looming large over his summer.

“In Melbourne I only really had my partner and my family would come over maybe for the Dreamtime game,” said Bolton.

“Kind of feels like playing junior football, be free and have fun. All your family’s in the stands, you kind of feel I don’t know energised, just feels good.”
