Fremantle’s newest draftee, Murphy Reid, has expressed his excitement to join the Club, stating he can’t wait to learn from the talented midfield group and leaders Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong.

“I’m really keen to get into it and crack into a very young and exciting team,” Reid said following his Fremantle selection.

“It’s quite surreal. They are obviously very talented players (Brayshaw and Serong), and I’m just so grateful to be in the position I’m in.

“Hopefully they can take me under their wing, and I can learn a couple of things.

“I’ve missed out on a few things over the years, but that just adds extra determination for me. I’m super grateful to Freo for picking me.”

Fremantle selected Reid with pick No. 17 in Wednesday night’s 2024 AFL Telstra National Draft.

The young talent shared his relief and excitement about joining the Freo Dockers.

“(It’s) a huge relief, and I’m super pumped. It was very nerve-wracking. I’m normally a pretty chilled-out guy, but tonight was quite different—I was very nervous,” Reid said.

“I met with the Club around four times, so I knew if I was there around their pick, I was a good chance. But going in, I had no idea about anything.

“You’d like to think all the interviews went well, and obviously they really liked me. I’m very grateful for that.”

A goalkicking midfielder, Reid averaged 28 disposals for the Sandringham Dragons and 24.5 disposals during the National Championships, where he earned All-Australian honours.

His creativity through the midfield and forward line makes him an exciting prospect, while his speed and footy smarts make him a consistent playmaker.

Fremantle Head of Player Personnel David Walls said the Club was pleased to have Reid slide to them at pick 17.

“He’s a super exciting, super skilful, classy midfield forward,” Walls said.

“We’ve been big on him for a couple of years back to the 16s and we thought he was flying under the radar a little bit there and then he exploded this year with his form at the start of the year for Sandringham and ended up being Vic Metro’s MVP.

“We had him a fair bit higher than 17 on our board.”

Walls said the Club still had interest in plenty of names available in Thursday night’s final draft selections.

“As been noted it’s a really deep draft so we’ve got more than enough names for tomorrow, but we’ve just got to wait and see who falls our way,” Walls concluded.
