Walyalup have gone undefeated on the road for the home and away season after defeating GWS by 30 points at Henson Park.

A five-goal first half highlighted by doubles from Irish duo Orlagh Lally and Aisling McCarthy set the tone for the afternoon.

“I thought we were a bit cleaner today in certain areas of the ground,” Senior Coach Lisa Webb said in her post-match media conference.

“For us to grind it out over four quarters is something we really focus on.

“There is a bit of an Irish flair - I think the first three goals all came from Irish players.

“They (Irish players) are incredible players, even in blustery conditions they can kick well and execute.”

A heavily contested third term saw Walyalup restrict the Giants to just one minor score for the quarter, while Arianna Hetherington extended the 19-point half time margin with her first-ever AFLW goal from a set shot.

“I was so excited for her,” midfielder Dana East said post-match.

“Leading up to the game we were saying ‘Ari you’re going to kick one, you’re going to kick one’.

“She backed herself in and she finally kicked one which was great to see.”

Midway through the final term McCarthy put the icing on her outstanding day out with her third major of the afternoon to accompany her 22 disposals, five marks and 456 metres gained.

Following her performance, McCarthy said the team focus had been on improving first starts to games.

“We just got the ball inside forward 50 early,” McCarthy said.

“It was good to get a great start.

“Early on in the season we struggled with our starts, and it’s been something we’ve been concentrating on so I’m just glad I could out it through the big sticks for the team.”

Walyalup finish the road trips for the season with a perfect 6-0 record.

The win has secured a spot in finals for the Club, with a potential top four finish still possible if results fall into place.

“I know it’s a cliché, but we just really wanted to stick to that process of what we’ve been wanting to do,” Webb said.

“We knew we were up for a fight and again next week the Western Bulldogs have got some great players down there and are putting in some strong performances, so we really want to finish off playing our best footy.

“We’ve had a few ups and downs in the season so to have a couple of strong performances together is really pleasing."

The Club’s final game of the home and away season will be against the Western Bulldogs at Fremantle Oval on Sunday 3 November.
