Fremantle's fresh trade acquisition Shai Bolton said he is looking forward to bringing his speed and pressure to Freo’s forward line in front of his family.
Speaking in his first interview as a Fremantle Docker, Bolton said he was glad the deal was finally done, with the 25-year-old looking forward to combining his electric pace with fellow speedster Michael Frederick.
“I’m very excited. I’ve always loved playing in front of my family, and I’m just super excited that the trade has finally been done,” Bolton said.
“I’m looking forward to playing alongside Freddy (Michael Frederick). He’s a pretty unreal player and is super-fast, but (playing alongside) all the boys, to be honest.
“I’m just super excited to get back home, play alongside, and get to know all the boys.”
Bolton played 135 games for the Tigers before making the move west, kicking 165 goals during this time and featuring in both the 2019 and 2020 premiership teams.
Returning to his home state of Western Australia, Bolton and his partner Sina are expecting the birth of their second child to join their two-year-old son Sekai.
“I’ve got a little two-year-old in Sekai, who’s in his terrible twos at the moment, but he keeps me pretty active, which is good, and then we’ve got a little girl on the way in just one month,” Bolton said.
“I grew up supporting Freo, and it’s a real surreal feeling that I’m finally going to be playing in the Purple. With my dad having played for Fremantle, it’s even more exciting to kind of keep it in the family.

“What I love about playing at Optus is going out and playing knowing that all your family is sitting in the stands. Obviously, I didn’t have that when I was playing over here in Melbourne - I really only had my partner and my boy - so it’s exciting to know I’ll have all my family.”
On top of his blistering speed and forward craft, Bolton believes his eight seasons in the AFL system will add valuable leadership to Fremantle’s young side.
“I want to bring my pressure, speed, and a bit of leadership for the boys,” Bolton said.
“I feel like it’s a little bit weird for me now because I’ve obviously been in the system for eight years now, and Freo have a very young list with lots of young boys that are just getting to their 100th game.
“I just can’t wait to learn off them and be in a fresh forward line.”
