Hayley Miller and Lisa Webb praised the entire team effort that sealed their 18-point win against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Tuesday evening.
After Fremantle’s slow start in Tuesday night’s match against Geelong, the side came back firing, kicking three majors in the second quarter and maintaining that consistency for the remainder of the match, taking home the win by 18-points at the final siren.
Finishing the match with 24 disposals, eight score involvements and a goal, co-vice-captain Hayley Miller spoke to Fox Footy after the game, crediting the entire team for the determination and grit put on display.
“I think (it was) a great team effort for us to grind it out in that second half,” Miller said.
“We felt like they probably got the jump on us early, but to our coaches credit, we moved some things around and managed to shut that down and get our game going.
While the side are missing their co-vice-captain in Áine Tighe following her season-ending knee injury, Miller said the side are relying on a team-wide effort in all areas on the ground.
“Unfortunately, we had an injury to Áine (Tighe), which is a massive loss for us, but it gives an opportunity for others to step up and I think that’s certainly what’s happened.
“It’s not one player that’s doing all the heavy lifting, it’s a real team effort.
Senior Coach Lisa Webb was proud of her side’s efforts on Tuesday evening, adapting to a change in structure and applying their feedback during the match.
“They just keep building; they keep learning on the job and they’re so adaptable to what we throw at them,” Webb said.
“It’s amazing to coach them at the moment to be honest.”
Webb insisted winning the ball at the contest played a crucial part in the side’s 18-point victory.
“Contest was obviously crucial; I thought Mim was dominant, and then when we got the ball forward, having that contest with Hayley down there was exceptional, and (I’m) proud of the way they went about it,” Webb said.
Webb praised ruck Mim Strom who had a massive impact on the match with 42 hitouts, seven tackles and six marks.
“She’s so good. Just the way she goes about it as well, and any type of feedback we give to her she continues to learn and grow,” Webb said.
“I think a lot of that credit should go to her brother Zac, who is a phenomenal coach.
“They are working so hard on her game and she’s never pleased – she just wants to keep building, so she’s in really fine form.”
Another major player in the match was Aish McCarthy, who amassed 28 disposals, six tackles, seven clearances and a goal in the final minute of the game.
“She’s phenomenal. She’s so clever, and she can kick both sides of the body as well,” Webb said.
“Just her professionalism (is amazing) – I’m always finding her around the Club looking at those one percenters to get better, (and she’s) always asking for meetings.”
“Everything I’ve thrown at her she’s continuing to take on and improve, and we’re really lucky to have her.”
Fremantle will take on Hawthorn in their second match for week 6 on Sunday 6 October, 5.05pm WST at Fremantle Oval.
