Defender Emma O’Driscoll has praised the team-wide effort and grit shown throughout the last quarter of Fremantle’s six-point win against Melbourne at the weekend.
Crediting the victory as 'one of the best wins' she had been a part of, O'Driscoll unpacked the thrilling final quarter that solidified the Club's third win of the season - in what was now famously her 49th game.
“That 49th is going down in history, because that was one of the best wins I’ve ever been a part of,” O’Driscoll said.
“I think the last quarter was a team effort. Us backs held up the wall really well – as soon as the ball spat out, we got it straight back in there.
“It was certainly a credit to our mids and forwards – their pressure was unreal in there.
“We were able to lock it in, create stoppage where it was needed, as well as getting a free kick in the end.”
The All-Australian defender touched on what the side’s focus was as they entered the final quarter, three goals behind Melbourne.
“I just think it comes down to grit. That last quarter was grit, and we know we can do it, so I can’t wait to keep producing that,” O’Driscoll said.
“A lot of trademark efforts (as well) – I think we bring it back to trademark.
“We like to pride ourselves on being connected, so I think being able to communicate between lines was something we’ve previously struggled with, but I think today we were able to communicate between backs, mids and forwards. (Also), really get around one another – we really supported each other all day.”
O’Driscoll unpacked the match-winning moment, as Aish McCarthy slotted the decider after the final siren.
“It was unbelievable wasn’t it,” O’Driscoll said.
“I think all of us backs were lining up on the wall and we just saw her (Aish), straight off the boot, and we all started running in because no matter if it was a goal or a point, it was unreal and we were going to win the game, so energy was certainly up.
“We got around her and the whole team ran in. It was unbelievable out there; I have no other words.”
Utility Gabby O’Sullivan put on a show, amassing 16 disposals, booting three goals, and had nine tackles and six clearances for the match.
“Gabs – isn’t she electric out there. I think the thing I love out Gabs the most, is that she’s so versatile,” O’Driscoll said.
“She gets thrown back, mid, forward, and she just gets the job done and brings it back to role. She epitomises role to be honest.
“I think regardless of how many goals she puts on the scoreboard; we love Gabs, and we value her so much.”
“She is a great recipient for our Life Membership as well, so for her to come out there today and play the way she did, I’m so proud of her.”
