Fremantle have come from behind to snatch a thrilling eight-point win over Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing at every stage of the game, it was an Orlagh Lally behind in the 13th minute of the final term that gave Freo the lead for the first time, before Hayley Miller secured the win with a soccer goal just a minute later.

“It felt so good out there. It was definitely really tough, and I think we just needed to reset (after last week),” Lally reflected post-match after the intense win.

“Keeping to our trademark and our structures, we needed to just really focus on what we needed to do and to keep bringing that grit and determination.

"It came down to that last quarter, and I think our fitness and all the effort that we’ve put in over preseason has really paid off.”

Held goalless in the first term after kicking into a strong wind, it was Ebony Antonio who opened the scoring account with some crafty crumbing to run into an open goal.

One quickly brought two as Gabby O’Sullivan drew a high free kick, nailing her set shot to set Fremantle up going into halftime just one point down.

A big goal from Áine Tighe in the third quarter against the wind started the momentum shift, keeping Fremantle within two goals ahead of a final term with the wind behind them in their favour.

It was late inclusion Amy Mulholland who drilled a beautiful drop punt from the pocket at the beginning of the fourth to send Fremantle into a frenzy.

“It was absolutely magnificent (Mulholland’s goal) and hats off and credit to her,” Lally said.

“Obviously, Aish Mac (McCarthy) was a test to play for a while, and for her (Mulholland) to just constantly have that mentality of being ready to go showed out there today, and everyone just really got around her."

Club debutant Gabby Biedenweg-Webster nearly kicked a special goal to take the lead after keeping the ball alive in the contest, tapping the ball along ahead of her, using her pace to leave her Power opponents behind before narrowly missing the goal.

“She (Biedenweg-Webster) came in late as a replacement player, but you would not know it; it feels like she’s been here for years,” Lally said.

“I’m lucky enough to be housemates with her, and she’s just a great person on and off the field."

"One thing we really pride ourselves on is that character, and she definitely brings all the values that we really cherish and want in our Club.”

Miller soon after secured the win with some classy soccer skills, putting Fremantle beyond doubt after a dominant final term that saw Port Adelaide struggle to move the ball out of their defensive half.

Fremantle will now return home to take on Melbourne at Fremantle Oval on Saturday 21 September.

“We constantly want to build. Whether it’s a win or a loss, there are things to learn, and obviously, we will recognise what we did well, and we’ll celebrate them and celebrate the win, but we’ll then be anchoring back down and getting to work for the next week,” Lally said.

“We’re really looking forward to the challenge against Melbourne. We want to get a win on our home deck, so I encourage everyone to get down and get around us.”
