Fremantle’s 2024 season has ended after going down to Port Adelaide by 20 points on Sunday afternoon, with young winger Nathan O'Driscoll reflecting on the season that has been as the Club looks ahead to 2025.
With Carlton losing their respective matchup to St Kilda, the Club had an opportunity to place themselves in the top eight with a win over the Power, but ultimately fell short in an arm-wrestle affair.
Speaking post-match on the Final Siren Podcast, O’Driscoll said the heart and effort of the group was undeniable despite the Club’s fourth close loss in a row.
“It’s obviously disappointing. The boys have had so many close games in a row; I think it’s three or four in a row under 15 points,” O’Driscoll said.
“There have been so many opportunities this year that we feel like we have probably let slip, but we can’t question the effort. We were saying in there (the post-match meeting) that it’s the execution we need to get better at.”
With today’s result, Fremantle finishes the home and away season with a record of 12 wins, 10 losses, and one draw, improving on the Club’s 2023 record of 10 wins and 13 losses.
Reflecting on the season that has been, O’Driscoll said there was plenty of growth still in the playing group as the Club looks ahead to 2025.
“You see how young we are, but I think we spoke about it briefly in there (post-match meeting); our execution under pressure definitely needs to go to another level,” O’Driscoll said.
“We’ve started games really poorly, if you look at the first 10 minutes (of games), once we get our game going, we’re in it essentially until the end in every game this season, bar maybe West Coast and Bulldogs.
"Every other game has probably been under 20 or 30 points.
“I think just the fourth quarter, under pressure, executing skills, and that because we know we can match it with these teams.
“The four games we’ve had previously, the last four weeks, we know were winnable ones. We win those games and we are probably top four right now."
Looking to the future, O’Driscoll was keen to laud that the future is bright for Fremantle.
“The core group we have, the staff that we have involved, it’s a great environment to be part of,” O’Driscoll said.
“The premiership isn’t too far from Freo; I can feel that. We are really connected as a whole football department.
“There is a lot of growth because we are really young and are connected as a group as well. We love each other.
“To get drafted here, I love the purple, I love the fans, I love everything about this footy Club.”
