Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir has declared that no matter the results of the other matches preceding Sunday’s clash with Port Adelaide, the team is playing to win 'no matter what'.
Longmuir said there would likely be discussions pre-game about what is on the line, but his messaging to the players during the game would not centre around playing in finals.
“Usually, when we aren’t playing well or we start to drift, those outcome-based thoughts aren’t helping the playing group perform well,” Longmuir said in his Thursday morning media conference.
“Giving them more, I’m not sure that’s giving them motivation in the game, we need to come back to the process.
“It’s outside noise, in a sense (focusing on other results), and we just need to make sure we get the reps in our preparation and embed what we need to for the game against Port.
“Our players are intrinsically motivated anyway; they just want to go out there and play well.
“Whether finals are on the line or not, they want to go out there, put their best foot forward, and compete really hard for four quarters. That will be the same this week."
Regarding the lead-up to the match, Longmuir said he has urged the players not to drift away from their current week-to-week routines.
“I talk to them about sticking to our process, and if their process is to sit down and watch the footy, then keep doing it. But if it’s not, then don’t get drawn into it,” Longmuir said.
“I think our process has allowed us to be in most games this year and play a pretty consistent level of footy out there.
“That’s been the message to the players: prepare as normal, put all our efforts into Port, and we’ve got to get the win no matter what.”
Talking about team selection, Longmuir said no final decision had been made on the likes of Sean Darcy and Michael Walters, with both needing to get through the Club’s final main training session today.
“He’s (Darcy) got to get through training and be able to prove himself,” Longmuir said.
“We don’t want to take him in if he’s not right, we’ll get a good understanding of what he can get through and what his pain levels are, and we’ll go from there.
“It was hard to get a gauge on small forwards, it was hard to get a gauge on anyone other than contest-to-contest work. It wasn’t much of a game (due to weather conditions).
“I’ll judge him (Walters) more on his fitness and form of the past rather than that game (for Peel).
“He felt good, played good game time, and played his role well.”
