Three Fremantle legends are set to be honoured in this year’s WA Football Hall of Fame in September.
Aaron Sandilands, Dale Kickett and Tony Buhagiar will soon join the ranks of Western Australia’s football elite after it was announced on Friday that the trio would be inducted.
Aaron Sandilands played 271 AFL games and earned four All-Australian selections, two Doig Medals and two Glendinning Medals.
From 2003 to 2019, Sandilands became a cornerstone of the Fremantle Dockers, dominating the ruck with his unique blend of height, agility and football intelligence.
He’s been a part of Fremantle’s fabric for nearly two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Club’s history.
Dale Kickett’s journey through football is nothing short of extraordinary.
After starting with Claremont in 1988, Kickett embarked on a career that took him to five different clubs across the country.
Kickett’s relentless passion for the game saw him rack up 266 games across WAFL (Claremont), VFL (Fitzroy, St Kilda, Essendon) and AFL (West Coast), with 135 of those at Fremantle.
A three-time Premiership player with Claremont, Kickett was known for his fearless play and electrifying presence as a half-back flanker, earning him the Doig Medal in 1997 and a place in Fremantle’s prestigious 25 since ‘95 team.
Kickett’s story is one of resilience, loyalty, and undying commitment to the sport.
Tony Buhagiar, the lively and sharp-eyed rover, completes the trio of inductees tied to Fremantle.
Starting off his career at East Fremantle in 1973, Buhagiar brought his speed and goal sense to the big stage, playing with Essendon and Footscray in the VFL and representing WA in State of Origin matches.
Buhagiar played 251 games and kicked 462 goals across his career in the WAFL and VFL, after retirement, he served on the Fremantle board from 2000 – 2009.
This year’s Hall of Fame ceremony will be a proud moment for Fremantle as these three icons take their rightful place among the legends of WA football.
The West Australian Football Commission will officially induct them on Sandover Medal night, a fitting tribute to their incredible careers and contributions to the game.
