Fremantle’s AFLW side are officially at the two-month mark of their pre-season and have taken part in their first hitout with an intraclub match.
Team White and Team Purple played six 10-minute segments, which saw purple dominate early, and maintain that for the remainder of the match.
Pleased to get some touch in, co-vice-captain Laura Pugh said it was a 'really good hitout.'
Here's three things we saw on Saturday...
NEW RECRUIT MAKES HER MARK
Fremantle’s most recent signing in Gabby Biedenweg-Webster had an outstanding performance on Saturday afternoon, exerting dominance in the backline.
Biedenweg-Webster brought multiple strong intercept marks, athleticism and communication to her side.
“Our newest recruit, Gabby – she was just exceptional all day,” Pugh said.
“She's got amazing voice out there, (she took) some absolutely spectacular intercept marks and just has great runs.
“She’s a really great inclusion to our side.”
FORWARD LINE CONNECTION
Having spent most of her time in the backline for her career to date, it’s been a different look for Pugh this pre-season.
“It's been great playing forward and learning off some of the best down there,” Pugh said.
“One of my main focuses is probably to mark the ball, because I usually just spoil, so that's pretty important.
“(I’m working on) getting up the ground, learning all the structures in the forward line and just having a ball as usual.”
Touching on the connection between the forwards, Pugh said she was pleased with how that was executed during the intraclub clash.
“Playing in the forward line, it's really great to see our connection (build),” Pugh said.
“(I’ve been) playing with the likes of Mullaz (Amy Mulholland) and Phil (Seth), and I feel like we're getting that connection and working really well together."
RUCK BATTLE
Working hard on their ruck craft, Mim Strom and Ari Hetherington put on a show with their hit-outs and impressive marking skills.
Pugh credits the effort and grit they’ve put into their pre-season training, to be able to put out a strong performance on game day.
“Mim and Ari, they just go at each other every training,” Pugh said.
“I guess they are reaping the benefits of all the hard work that they're putting in.”
Both Hetherington and Strom were great assets to their side’s backline when needed, picking up crucial intercept marks.
LOOK AHEAD
Looking forward to round 1, Pugh said the side are pumped and ready to go, after a long pre-season.
“I think everyone's itching to play, it's been a long, long wait,” Pugh said.
“Everyone’s putting in such hard work and hard effort, and all the coaches too.
“We’ve had these dress rehearsals, (but) we're ready for showtime.”
In an RAC Derby preview, Fremantle will face the West Coast Eagles for a pre-season match simulation at Lathlain Oval on Friday 9 August at 5pm WST.
