A fast-finishing Essendon team has come from behind to snatch victory over Fremantle, kicking five of the last six goals.

Fremantle went into the final term with a 19-point lead but failed to hold onto the win getting outscored by 20 points in the last quarter.

Speaking post-match key forward Jye Amiss said the group would look to turn things around quickly ahead of their six-day break before facing Geelong at Optus Stadium in round 22.

“Obviously not the result we wanted, we thought we had patches through the game that we didn’t quite get the contest right and they were able to win it in the middle and get it to the outside,” Amiss said.

“That’s what beat us in the end.

“We will fly home tonight and come in on Monday to review the game.

“It will be a strong review, but we will look to take some positives and take some things to work on, hit training mid-week and get to work as we prepare to take on the Cats.

Fremantle’s defence held firm for the majority of the game but the Bombers were eventually able to break through kicking five consecutive goals in the final term.

Winning the inside 50 count 59-44, Fremantle’s valiant defensive unit eventually broke to the relentless entries, conceding five consecutive goals as Bombers took the lead for the first time since the first quarter.

“I don’t think it was legs, I think it was the contest they were able to get it inside to out better than us and they just wanted it more than us in that last five to ten minutes,” Amiss said.

Amiss himself drew Fremantle level with 36 seconds left on the clock with his fourth major of the afternoon, but Essendon’s final centre clearance and point pushed the home side over the line.

Fremantle will now face Geelong at Optus Stadium on Saturday 10 August in a vital clash as the race for finals heats up with Fremantle playing three teams in the top five to finish the home and away season.
