Speaking at his Tuesday afternoon media conference, Hayden Young highlighted the areas where the playing group lacked during the round six RAC Derby loss to West Coast earlier in the season.
“Coming off the last time we played them, there was a few areas of the game that we didn’t quite get right,” Young said.
“Largely that was around the contest around the ball and in the air.
“They are probably two things that we will look to rectify because when West Coast get those things going in their game, they are a pretty strong opposition.
“We saw that last time and those areas of the game we will focus on and make sure that we get right.”
Since the shock round six loss, the Club has responded strongly picking up eight wins, three losses and a draw in the next 12 rounds to sit fourth on the AFL ladder with five home and away fixtures to go before finals.
Young’s transition to the midfield has been a large part of the Club’s midfield dominance this year, highlighted by his standout performance at the weekend’s win over Melbourne where the 23-year-old consistently broke away from stoppage using his left and right foot to hit targets inside 50.
Young’s hard work and ability to impact a game has seen the big-bodied bull rated as the second-best player in the competition by Champion Data’s official player ratings in the last three weeks, only behind Carlton captain Patrick Cripps.
“I feel like now that I’m getting comfortable in the position (in the midfield) I’m feeling a bit more composed with the ball in hand, and I suppose my teammates around me help me out with that by putting me into space,” Young admitted.
“I take a lot of pride in my kicking, and it is a really good feeling when you are able to lace out a forward or put it to their advantage and they go back and kick a goal.
“It’s a part of my game that I value, and I want to keep building on.”
Young has averaged 24 disposals, three marks, four tackles, 4.6 clearances, 6.25 score involvements and 2.6 goal assists in his last three appearances.
