Inaccurate kicking proved costly for Fremantle kicking 4.9 in the second half to fall 13-points short to Hawthorn at UTAS Stadium.
Fremantle only kicked one goal in the final term, despite winning the inside 50 count 45-41 for the game.
After a tense, physical battle experienced defender Brennan Cox said Hawthorn were able to run out the full four quarters more efficiently.
“They executed better in that fourth quarter.
“We knew they were in good form coming in and we knew it was going to be an arm wrestle.
“They managed to sustain that for four quarters where we dropped off at the end.”
Under siege in the final term, Fremantle’s defensive unit did their best to propel the Hawks attack while launching Fremantle’s own.
“Chappy' (Heath Chapman) and 'Clarky' (Jordan Clark) have been in really good form,” Cox said.
“The way they setup behind the ball and the way they use it going forward is really good.
“I’m still a little bit rusty (after a long-term hamstring injury) but I felt way better today and hopefully I can just keep building and getting confidence in the body.
“The way they (Hawthorn) play, they like to go through the corridor and speed it up, so it was a high intensity game.”
Fremantle will now return to WA to take on Melbourne on Sunday 21 July in the Club’s Starlight Purple Haze Game, presented by South32.
“We're excited to get back to the fans and back on the home deck for a good cause,” Cox said.
“I expect us to bounce back.”
