Fremantle defender Heath Chapman believes the trust within the defensive unit holds the Club in good stead, despite losing club captain Alex Pearce to injury late in the game.
Chapman, who was one of the standout performers in Fremantle’s 20-point win over the Gold Coast Suns with 16 disposals, six marks and six tackles, said experienced defender Luke Ryan became the on-field leader in place of Pearce late in the game.
“No matter who’s playing I think our system beats any system in the competition,” Chapman said on the Final Siren Podcast post-game.
“Obviously it’s not ideal with him (Alex Pearce) going down, but I think we all knew that if we just all play our role… no matter who goes down we could get it done not matter what.
“Luke (Ryan) was leading us down there.”
Chapman, who missed last week’s loss to the Bulldogs with hamstring awareness said the evolution of his game is credit to the experience and confidence he gains from being on-field.
“I think (my game) is coming with experience, the more I play out there the more confidence I have to take the game on, take a bit of a riskier option and we are under instruction to take what they give us,” Chapman said.
“Sometimes I bite off more than I can chew but I learn from those moments, and I guess I just do what I can.
"We put a big focus on valuing the right things and just sticking to the process that we have and trusting that it is going to get us where we want to go.”
Fremantle extended their winning streak against Gold Coast at Optus Stadium to 3-0, and will now take on top-of-the-table Sydney at the SCG on Saturday 29 June.
