Twelve Fremantle-listed players lined up for Peel, helping the Thunder secure a 44-point win over the Perth Demons on Saturday afternoon.
After a tough loss to Claremont in round nine, Peel got off to another inaccurate start, kicking three behinds in the first four minutes of the game.
Both sides brought immense pressure from the get-go, but the Thunder’s backline held firm, with Corey Wagner (26 disposals, six inside 50’s) providing a clever spoil to prevent a goal for the Demons.
A goalless first term for Peel ended with the Thunder being four points down at quarter time.
Intense tackling pressure from the Demons continued to disrupt the Thunder in the second term as Perth kicked their second of the day.
However, Will Brodie (32 disposals, eight inside 50’s, one goal) sent a thumping kick inside 50 allowing former Fremantle player Nathan Wilson to convert his first goal of the day, putting hope back in the minds of Thunder fans.
It was clear Liam Reidy (54 hitouts) was dominating in the ruck, giving Peel first hands at the stoppages.
Tom Emmett’s (one goal, 13 disposals) efforts didn’t go unnoticed, providing a solid kick that set up Peel for another goal, reducing the margin to four points.
Momentum was building for Peel as their aggressive ball movement saw the Thunder take control of the game and kick three unanswered goals.
Will Brodie continued to impress, finding space and time for a quick snap on his non-preferred foot, giving Peel reward for their efforts and allowing them to end the half with an 11-point lead.
Coming into the second half, Peel began to dominate in the backline, highlighted by a Hugh Davies (13 disposals, five marks) spoil that crushed the Demons chances of scoring a goal in the third quarter.
It was clear Peel were beginning to find their way around the opposition as Brodie sent the ball towards key forward Matt Taberner (16 disposals, six marks, one goal) letting him secure a 21-point lead to end the third quarter.
By the last quarter, Peel proved they had found their grove working cohesively in all aspects.
One final goal from Nathan Wilson brought his total to five for the day, sending Peel home with a convincing 44-point win.
Looking back on the game, defender Ethan Hughes was pleased with the win.
“It was a tough start. We lost a few contests, and they (Perth) were able to get the ball going forward,” he said.
“We turned it around in the second quarter, started winning a few contests, executing our basics, getting the ball to our forwards and hitting the scoreboard.”
Hughes was full of confidence for the future of Fremantle key defender Hugh Davies.
“He’s really started to develop himself, he’s becoming a consistent footballer, and he’s really showing each week that he’s building some consistent footy,” Hughes said.
He also praised Will Brodie and Liam Reidy for their solid work in the midfield.
“It helps when we’ve got a dominant midfield, winning it out of the contests and getting the ball going forward…so it’s nice to have them on our team,” he said.
Peel will be looking to secure another win when they take on West Perth at Pentanet Stadium on 22 June.
